Why should we exfoliate?
The skin regeneration is a cycle that lasts around 28 days, during which time the keratinocytes (dead skin cells) of the outermost layer of the skin naturally falls off.
As we age and with the passing of time, this natural renewal process slows down, resulting in dull & dry sometimes flaky skin, which has less oxygen, nutrients, & lacks moisture.
The exfoliation process removes keratinocytes on the skin's outermost surface, the stratum corneum, which is in the epidermis layer of the skin.
Exfoliation is essential for healthy and younger-looking skin. With the removal of the keratinocytes, the fresh vibrant skin that lies underneath can become oxygenated & readily absorbs all the active ingredients, nutrients, toners, serums, moisturizers or treatments you apply.
This major step can visibly reduce uneven skin tones, blemishes, fine lines & wrinkles while leaving the skin's surface cleaner, smoother, & softer. Exfoliation also helps to promote younger, more vibrant looking skin.
Exfoliators can be sub-divided into mechanical & chemical categories.
Mechanical exfoliation – functionally removes these keratinocytes by actively rubbing against the surface of the skin. Our Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser uses 99.9% standardized rounding sugar crystals to remove these cells mechanically without tearing into the fresh, newly revealed skin underneath.
Chemical exfoliation – At Suki we use alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) or enzymes, to go between the cells to break down the intercellular glue that binds these dead skins cells together. This allows the keratinocytes to be removed, exposing the fresh & younger looking skin beneath. Chemical exfoliates can be found in our Resurfacing Enzyme Peel.
